Apache/mod_ssl vulnerability and mitigation

November 7, 2009

Apache HTTP feather logo

The following announcement has just been made to the announce mailing list:

Apache httpd is affected by CVE-2009-3555[1] (The SSL Injection or MiM attack[2]).

The Apache httpd webserver relies on OpenSSL for the implementation of the SSL/TLS protocol.

We strongly urge you to upgrade to OpenSSL 0.9.8l; and to be prepared to deploy OpenSSL 0.9.8m as it becomes available[3].

Note that these are for short term and mid-term mitigation only; the long term solution may well require a modification of the SSL and/or

TLS protocols[4].

For those who are not able to upgrade OpenSSL swiftly and/or for those who need detailed logging – we recommend that you roll out

this patch[5]:

http://www.apache.org/dist/httpd/patches/

apply_to_2.2.14 CVE-2009-3555-2.2.patch

sha1: 28cd58f3758f1add39417333825b9d854f4f5f43

as soon as possible. This is a partial fix in lieu of the protocol issues being addressed and further changes to OpenSSL. Like the

OpenSSL 0.9.8l stopgap measure this patch rejects in-session renegotiation.

If you are unable to patch and unable to roll our a newer version of OpenSSL, and you rely on Client Side Authentication with Certificates

then we recommend that you 1) ensure that you limit your configuration to a single ‘SSLClient require’ on VirtualHost/Sever level and 2)

remove all other (re)negotiation/require directives. However this does NOT fully protect you – it just curtails authentication in this

specific setting.

Firebug Lite

November 5, 2009

header

Firebug is an extension for Firefox, but what happens when you need to test your pages in Internet Explorer, Opera, and Safari?

The solution is Firebug Lite, a JavaScript file you can insert into your pages to simulate some Firebug features in browsers that are not named “Firefox”.

Firebug Lite creates the variable “firebug” and doesn’t affect or interfere with HTML elements that aren’t created by itself.

The following screen shots show you what you get…

tortoisesvn_logo_hor468x64

TortoiseSVN is an easy-to-use SCM / source control software for Microsoft Windows and possibly the best standalone Subversion client there is. It is implemented as a Windows shell extension, which makes it integrate seamlessly into the Windows explorer. Since it’s not an integration for a specific IDE you can use it with whatever development tools you like.

TortoiseSVN 1.6.6 has been released.

This is a bugfix release/maintenance release.

You can get it from the download page.

seamonkey_logo

The SeaMonkey project at Mozilla is excited to release its completely refurbished next generation of the all-in one Internet suite today: SeaMonkey 2.0, now available for free download, melds the ideas behind Netscape Communicator with the modern platform of Firefox 3.5 to create one of the most compelling open source products for advanced Internet users.

The combination of an Internet browser, email & newsgroup client, HTML editor, IRC chat and web development tools, that has already established a wide user base in its previous incarnations, has been rebuilt on top of the modern Mozilla platform, featuring world-class add-on management among other things.

In addition, it has been improved with

  • feed support (including an RSS and Atom feed reader in the mail component),
  • a modern look,
  • restoration of browser tabs and windows after crashes or restarts,
  • tabbed mail,
  • automated updates,
  • smart history search from the location bar,
  • faster JavaScript,
  • HTML5 features (for example video and downloadable fonts),
  • and even support for the Lightning calendar add-on (which will issue a beta for installation on SeaMonkey 2.0 in the next few weeks).

The Release Notes feature more in-depth lists of the improvements and known issues with the new version as well as installation requirements and instructions.
